Alaska Airlines Flight Compensation Guide

The following steps will give you all the information that you need to file a claim successfully with Alaska Airlines.

Step 1: Determine Eligibility for Flight Compensation

Assistance For Delay/Cancellation

To check if you qualify for compensation from Alaska Airlines due to overbooking, here’s a simplified guide:

  1. On an overbooked flight, the airline should first check to see if there is anybody that will voluntarily be removed from the flight, usually for a deal of a flight voucher or cash, as well as a seat on the next available flight.
  • Do not be afraid of negotiating with them.  Be sure to clarify the complete package before you agree to anything.
  • This includes:
    • Confirming the next flight they will book you on.
    • The cash or voucher compensation total (airline+meal voucher)
    • Hotel stay (if applicable)
    • If they are unable to find any volunteers, then they will move on to involuntary bumping.
  1. If you are involuntarily bumped from a flight, then you are entitled to compensation in line with Department of Transportation’s Regulations.
  • 200% of One-Way Fare: If the airline arranges alternative transportation that arrives at your destination within one to two hours (for domestic flights) or one to four hours (for international flights) of your originally scheduled arrival time.
  • 400% of One-Way Fare:  If the airline arranges alternative transportation that arrives at your destination more than two hours later (for domestic flights) or more than four hours later (for international flights) than your originally scheduled arrival time.
  1. DO NOT accept travel vouchers from the airline.  They are legally required to pay you cash compensation.  Sometimes they will negotiate with you and give you a greater value through vouchers than what you would be expected to receive in cash.  You can choose this option if you like, but keep in mind that these vouchers usually expire, so be mindful of your future travel plans.

***It is important that you get a Denied Boarding Form from the gate agent.  This document is really important because it proves that you were denied boarding and shows how it affected your trip.  Unlike other flight problems where you can get evidence from different places, you can’t prove denied boarding without this form.

Assistance For Delay/Cancellation

If your flight has been delayed or canceled, Alaska Airlines is not liable to provide cash compensation.  For this, ClaimCatalyst can not help, you must reach out directly to the gate agent or another airline representative at the time of delay/cancellation.  Alaska Airlines has pledged to help in other ways in accordance with their Customer Service Commitment:

  • Meal Voucher: If your flight is delayed by three hours or more due to circumstances within Alaska Airlines’ control, they offer a reasonable meal to each ticketed guest at the airport, subject to vendor availability.
  • Hotel Accommodations: For overnight stays due to cancellations or significant delays caused by circumstances within Alaska Airlines’ control, they will provide complimentary hotel accommodations, including round-trip ground transportation.
  • Rebooking Guarantee: In controllable situations such as delays, cancellations, or diversions, Alaska Airlines will place you on the next available flight at no extra charge.
  • Compensation Options: In case of delays or cancellations caused by factors within Alaska Airlines’ control, you can choose between a discount code of at least $50 valid for one year on a future Alaska Airlines flight or at least 2,000 Mileage Plan miles.
